Why languages?
People often ask me why the fascination with languages? For me, it’s summed up in the expression ‘They really spoke my language.” We use it when we want to talk about a real sense of connection that we’ve experienced with another person. And that’s what speaking another language can give you: connection.
You don’t need to speak much, even just a few words are enough to light a spark of recognition in someone else and trigger that magical sense of ‘woah, something cool is going on here.’ That’s why all my stories, from The Fabulous Lost and Found to Lingo Dingo are all a bit silly. How often are you going to need to use the phrases ‘I have lost my hat’ or ‘Have a gherkin’? Not much. But how often will someone smile if you say them? All the time!
And now, print on demand technology means that I can bring these books to languages with relatively fewer speakers. That makes me really happy because I want to celebrate that wonderful diversity of languages around the world and make sure that every child has the chance to learn even just a few words of a language that really matters to them.
